Stolen Gravel
News release from the Coos Co. Sheriff’s Office. On May 16, 2014 at about 0546 hours the Coos County Sheriff’s Office received a report from a citizen regarding two men and a woman stealing freshly laid gravel from the roadway near milepost .5 of Ross Inlet Road, Coos Bay. A deputy was dispatched from home and on his way to the scene discovered a small Ford Ranger pickup, loaded with gravel, alongside the road at the intersection of Coos River Highway and D Street in Eastside. The bed of the pickup had been filled with the gravel which was then covered over by grass and blankets. Two people were contacted at the truck and identified as Melissa Neal and Camden McSorley; the second male subject had fled the truck when he saw the deputy coming. When Ms. Neal and Mr. McSorley were questioned they admitted they had taken the gravel from the road site. They were taken into custody without incident. In the investigation it was learned that the pickup that had the gravel in it also had license plates on it that were reported stolen out of Eugene in 2013. A confirmation on the theft of the plates was made and the plates were seized from the vehicle. The vehicle was towed by Mast Brothers Towing due to it blocking traffic. A foreman from the Coos County Road Department had responded to assist. In searching the scene of the theft on Ross Inlet it is believed that 3-5 yards of gravel had been taken, along with 10 traffic safety cones left there to protect the citizens from the severe abrupt edge into the slough. The section of road is being prepped for paving by the Coos County Road Department. The foreman explained they had left a slight berm of gravel to safeguard the citizens also from the abrupt edge but this is the gravel that had been taken. Camden McSorley and Melissa Neal were transported to the Coos County Jail and booked on the charges of Theft in the Second Degree, 2 counts each, Criminal Mischief in the Second degree, 2 counts and bail set at $30,000. Both were released on their own recognizance. The investigation is continuing and possible additional arrest possible.
