The Coos County Sheriff’s Office would like to take this opportunity to announce the addition of its newest Deputy in the form of Canine Deputy “Neeko.” Neeko is a two year old black German Sheppard and came to the Sheriff’s Office from Virginia where Deputy Adam Slater (Neeko’s handler) attended basic canine school. Deputy Slater is the Sheriff’s Office Deputy assigned to patrol Bureau of Land Management lands and works closely with several individuals from that agency throughout the course of his duties. The Sheriff’s Office approached the BLM in July 2012 about the possibility of getting a police canine funded for the deputy assigned in that position. The BLM was extremely supportive of the idea and proposed the Sheriff’s Office submit an application to the Resource Advisory Committee or (RAC) for consideration of funding the program. After an extensive process the RAC decided to approve funding in the amount of $22,000 for costs associated with starting a patrol dog program including kennels, gear, initial vet checks, the K-9 itself, basic school and other items associated with beginning this program. The BLM has been extremely important in this process and the Sheriff’s Office is extremely grateful for their involvement and support in this program. The Sheriff’s Office will be responsible for the re-occurring costs for Neeko including vet checks, any emergency’s requiring medical attention and food. The Sheriff’s Office is very excited about the addition of K-9 Deputy “Neeko” and look forward to the assistance he will provide the citizens of our County during his time of service with the Coos County Sheriff’s Office. Deputy Adam Slater and K-9 Neeko will begin their duties starting Monday December 2nd, 2013.
