Southwestern Oregon Community College is pleased to announce that Southern Oregon University (SOU) is partnering with Southwestern and the Southwestern Oregon University Center to bring a bachelor’s level elementary education teacher licensure program back to the South Coast. A “Town Hall” information session with SOU representatives will be held on Southwestern’s Coos campus at the end of the month on Wednesday, March 30, 2016 from 4:30 – 6:30 pm in Tioga Hall, room 505. IPV video conferencing will be available via Curry campus. Interested students and community members are invited to attend and learn more about this exciting new partnership. SOU has had a long standing partnership with the College in regards to their onsite graduate education courses held on Coos campus at the beginning of each summer term. Both institutions are pleased to see this partnership continue to grow with the addition of the bachelor’s level program. The prior onsite teacher licensure partnership between Eastern Oregon University, Southwestern and the University Center, proved to be an asset to the local community workforce. From 2000-2014, seven cohorts totaling 111 students graduated from the program eligible to sit for their Initial I Teaching License exam in Oregon. A majority of those graduates continue to reside in the region, educating the youth within Coos, Curry and Douglas counties. Through the current collaborative efforts between the College and SOU, our region and school district can yet again benefit from local graduates attaining teacher licensure in the community they reside in.
