CCSO release – On April 11, 2021, the Coos County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a possible explosive device near mile post 2 on the 4000 line into the Elliott State Forest. The caller was in the area recreating with family, when they located a device that resembled a pipe bomb. Deputies were dispatched to the area and arrived at about 1230 hours. Deputies located the area and the device. The device appeared to be a live explosive device. Deputies contacted Oregon State Police Explosive Unit and shared information and pictures of the device. The detectives from OSP Explosives Unit also believed the device to be a live explosive. OSP Explosive Unit was dispatched to the area from Central Point. Deputies secured the area until they could arrive. OSP members arrived on scene at about 1630 hours. OSP Explosive Unit destroyed the explosive device and rendered the area safe. The Coos County Sheriff’s Office would like to remind anyone finding a similar or suspicious device to leave it in place and call the police. Improvised devices can be dangerous to move and come in many different shapes and sizes.
