Fake Orca, May 25

Sea lions have been overcrowding public docks in some of Oregon’s ports this season, and one community is going to try something different to get them to move on. The Port of Astoria has tried many ways to discourage the sea lions from lying on their docks. Shooing them away hasn’t worked as some of the large-heavy beasts only growl at the human presence on the docks. Gun shots, fire crackers seem to be amusing, and they have even tried electric mats, but they haven’t worked. Other considerations have included fencing in the docks, but a Bellingham, WA man has offered something totally different. Terry Buzzard of Island Marine Cruises uses a life-sized mock Orca to promote his business in parades and other events. He has offered its use to the Port of Astoria. No one is sure if the sea lions will react to the fake Orca or not. Orcas prey on seals and sea lions and their presence usually results in a scattering of the mammals in the water. Buzzard adds, however, if nothing else, humans might be amused by the effort.
