On Saturday, February 25, 2017, at approximately 8:40 a.m., OSP Troopers responded to a two vehicle crash on Highway 101 near milepost 249 (approximately 12 miles south of Coos Bay). Preliminary information indicates a blue/grey 2010 Ford Taurus was northbound on Highway 101 when the driver observed an oncoming southbound white 2004 Nissan Xterra began to fishtail and leave its lane. The vehicles collided in the northbound lane and the Nissan Xterra caught on fire. The driver of the Nissan Xterra died as a result of the crash. The identity of the driver is being withheld pending a next of kin notification. Both occupants of the Taurus were transported to the Coos Bay area hospital for non-life threatening injuries.
