Their generous offering had to be shutdown Tuesday, April 14. No, the government did not step in and force a South Oregon Coast business to stop their giveaway – turns out the response was overwhelming. Gold Beach Books jumped into the stay-at-home order and offered to giveaway used books to anyone who asked. They asked. Thousands across our country asked and that’s what shutdown the free offering while the owners try to catch up with the requests. Prior to the giveaway, Gold Beach Books had an inventory of over 40,000 used books, plus a few new titles in the inventory. The free books were listed on the store’s website, and those who selected a book received it in the mail at no charge. The only restriction, one per household. Gold Beach Books opened in 2003 and its originator Ted Watkins, considered it the largest used book store in Oregon outside of the popular Powell Books in Portland.
