Coos Bay Public Library hosts a series of presentations by local residents who have experienced “Travel with a Purpose: Local People Doing Good in Troubled Places” beginning Thursday, June 16th at 7 p.m. The June program will focus on Haiti. One of the poorest countries on Earth, Haiti is still reeling from the devastation following the 2010 earthquake. Health care issues are especially challenging. Local resident Nurse Practitioner Audrey Duke will share her experience working in a clinic that lacked many essentials – including electricity! On Thursday, July 14th, South Sudan will be featured. After almost thirty years of civil war in the Sudan, the new country of South Sudan was formed in 2011. Within two years, South Sudan was wracked by its own civil war. John and Margaret Jones will describe their travels to South Sudan to help finish an elementary school and create a healing and trauma center. The series will continue through September with future programs to be announced. These presentations, sponsored by the Friends of Coos Bay Public Library, are free and open to the public.
