On Thursday, October 3, 2019 at approximately 11:05 P.M. Oregon State Police Troopers and emergency personnel responded to the report of a two vehicle crash on Hwy 99E and Waconda Rd NE. Preliminary investigation revealed that a silver 2007 Nissan Murano was traveling southbound on Hwy 99E when it veered from the southbound lane and struck a 2009 Kia Sportage, operated by Rodion E. Ovchinnikov (86) of Woodburn, that was stopped for a stop sign on Waconda Rd NE at Hwy 99E. The operator of the Nissan Murano fled the scene on foot and was possibly picked up by another vehicle. Ovchinnikov was transported to the Salem Hospital with serious injuries and later to OHSU in Portland. Anyone with information regarding the operator of the Nissan Murano is requested to contact the Oregon State Police at *OSP or 1-800-442-2068 and refer to case # SP19-355565. UPDATE: The Oregon State Police has arrested Angel Andres-Mercado (47) for Failing to Perform Duties of a Driver / Felony (Hit and Run). He has been lodged at the Marion County Jail. Additional charges are still being investigated and will be referred to the Marion County DA’s Office. OSP would like to thank the public and media for their assistance.
