On March 5th, 2016 at about 7AM, the Oregon State Police was requested by the Bend Police Department to investigate a two vehicle crash involving one of their on-duty officers. Preliminary information revealed a Bend Police Officer was responding to an emergency back-up call when he was involved in a crash. The officer was driving a marked 2015 Ford Explorer westbound on Greenwood Avenue with his emergency lights and siren activated. The officer entered the 8th Street intersection and collided with a southbound 1997 Chevrolet Pickup. After the collision the police vehicle slid onto the southwest corner of the intersection, jumping the curb and striking a pedestrian who was on the sidewalk. The police vehicle continued and struck a building where it came to rest. The pedestrian, Brian ZACHER, age 39, of Tualatin, was taken to St Charles Medical Center in Bend for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. The Bend Police Corporal, Rob Emerson, was taken to St Charles Medical Center in Bend for non-life threatening injuries. The driver of the Chevrolet, Eric C OLSON, age 58, of Bend, was not injured. The eastbound lanes of Greenwood were closed for over two hours to allow for the investigation to be conducted. OSP was assisted by the Bend Police Department, the Oregon Department of Transportation and Bend Fire and Rescue. This is an ongoing investigation.
