Kidnapping, May 30

News release CCSO.  On May 26, 2017 the Coos County Sheriff’s office received a call from a citizen in the Bandon area of Coos County who had found a frightened woman running down the road near Prosper Junction Road.  At about 10:18 pm the Sheriff’s Office, assisted by the Bandon Police Department contacted the woman.  She described being taken at knifepoint from her apartment complex in San Jose California about 10 hours prior.  The woman, a 22 year old Hispanic/American, and college student at the San Jose State University, reported she was made to drive in her own vehicle which she was carjacked in.  The victim reported she had run out of gas, as the light had been on for some time.  When the car came to a stop, the victim told deputies she took the opportunity and fled, running into a high grass area nearby and lying down for an hour or two.  The victim reported it was daylight when she ran.  After darkness fell she made her way to Highway 101 and into the area of Prosper Junction.  Law enforcement located the vehicle a short distance off the road near the old Rogge Forest Products planer mill at Bullards Bridge and Highway 101. The Coos Bay Police Department sent K9 Dak to the scene and a track of the suspect was undertaken.  Two hours had passed since the suspect had last been seen.  The track was unsuccessful.  The vehicle was towed to a secure location for further analysis.  The woman was taken to Bay Area Hospital where she was treated for injuries to her face from the suspect striking her.  Deputies interviewed her there.  Deputies made contact with the San Jose area law enforcement.  The San Jose State University police had conducted an investigation when the woman’s father and family had showed up to meet her for graduation and she was not there.  Deputies contacted the University police as well as the city of San Jose Police.  No report had been taken by the San Jose police, although the abduction had occurred inside the jurisdiction of the city.  The University Police had started an investigation.  Deputies contacted the Coos County Women’s Safety and Resource Center who provided an advocate for the victim. The Center was able to house the victim until her family could arrive over the weekend to take her home.  The victim was interviewed further on Saturday and she was able to provide a few more details.  The investigation is continuing with deputies working with the San Jose Police Department who is the lead agency in this investigation.  The Medford Resident Agency of the Federal Bureau of Investigation was given details of the abduction also.  The suspect is described as a mixed race African American and Hispanic male, in his 30’s.  He was last seen wearing a black hoodie, a black baseball hat, and black winter style gloves.  The male suspect does not have facial hair according to the victim.  It is not believed the public is at risk.  Updates were placed on the Sheriff’s Office Facebook page over the weekend.   It is not believed the suspect remains in the local area, although not impossible.  The victim did not know her abductor.  The investigation is ongoing.
