News release from the Newport PD. On July 6, 2014 at about 5:15 p.m., Newport Police Officers, along with Lincoln County Sheriff’s Deputies, and Oregon State Police Troopers, were dispatched to a disturbance at 1523 NW Nye St. Reportedly, two subjects at the location were armed, one with a machete, the other with a gun. As Officer’s arrived, they saw Juan Bruno-Antonio, age 29 of Newport, leaving the residence. Officers located several other people inside the residence, we well as a loaded AK-47 rifle. Officers investigating the incident learned that Bruno-Antonio was intoxicated, and had become embroiled in an argument with another tenant, Juan Lopes-Sanchez, age 28 of Newport. The two separated, but Bruno-Antonio retrieved a machete, returned to the room, and confronted Lopes-Sanchez. Witnesses and the victim stated that Bruno-Antonio swung the machete multiple times at Lopes-Sanchez, who used his AK-47 rifle stock to deflect the machete strikes. After multiple strikes, the machete was dislodged from Bruno-Antonio’s hand and fell to the floor, where it was picked up by another tenant and removed from the house. Bruno-Antonio continued the assault by punching Lopes-Sanchez multiple times in the head and face area. Lopes-Sanchez received minor injuries to his face and nose. Bruno-Antonio was taken into custody. While in a Newport Police vehicle, Bruno-Antonio attempted to kick his way out, causing about $300 damage to the left passenger’s window. Bruno-Antonio was lodged at the Lincoln County Jail on charges of Attempted Assault I; Assault IV; Menacing; Disorderly Conduct; and Criminal Mischief II. His bail was set at $137,500.
