Marshfield’s basketball teams both fell on the first day of the 4A SkyWest Crossover Basketball tournament in Southern Oregon Friday. The No. 7 Pirate boys dropped a 53-43 game to No. 5 North Valley at South Umpqua High School in Tri City, while the No. 12 girls lost 49-41 to No. 5 Mazama of Klamath Falls at Hidden Valley High School south of Grants Pass. On Saturday, the Pirate boys (9-4) downed No. 16 Hidden Valley 53-50. Junior Rylee Trendell scored a season high 18. However, the Pirate girls dropped a 54-25 game to No. 3 Henley. Marshfield’s boys play at No. 9 Valley Catholic (8-4) Tuesday, Jan. 13 in Beaverton. The Pirates have already beaten two other Cowapa League teams in the pre-season, No. 22 Tillamook (5-5) and No. 4 Scappoose (11-1). The Pirate girls will also be at Valley Catholic in Beaverton to play the No. 6 Valiants. As far as the league challenge, the Far West League boys won 7-5, but the Skyline Conference took the girl’s challenge 8-4.

North Bend’s basketball teams won their openers in the two-day SkyWest Crossover Basketball Tournament Friday in Southern Oregon. The Bulldog boys beat Hidden Valley 56-45 at South Umpqua High School in Tri City, while the girls bettered North Valley 45-33 at Hidden Valley High School south of Grants Pass. The two teams made it a weekend sweep with victories on Saturday. The No. 1 ranked boys handed No. 5 No. Valley only their second loss of the year, 69-60, in the final game of the two-day challenge. Senior Drew Matthews scored 35-points against the Knights. A little further south, the Bulldog girls won their fourth straight in handing Phoenix a 47-28 loss. North Bend’s girls (6-5) open the 4A Far West League season Jan. 16 at home to Brookings-Harbor. The boys (10-0) play at No. 10 Sutherlin Tues., Jan. 13.
