Marshfield improved to 2-0 on the young 2016 prep football season Friday night with a 47-14 non-league win at Phoenix in hot Southern Oregon. The temperature at game time was in the upper 80s, but cooled throughout the contest. The Pirates had a four-touchdown performance out of senior Chance Jacobs. Marshfield hosts Junction City (1-0) this Friday night in the Pirates’ home opener. The Tigers opened their season Friday night with a 40-0 win over visiting Tillamook. North Bend (1-0) had the night off, but will host Cascade (1-1) this Friday night at Vic Adams Field.

Visiting Crater defeated Marshfield’s boys 3-0 in a non-league soccer match Saturday in Coos Bay. The Pirates (1-1) next play at Cottage Grove on Tuesday.

Marshfield went 1-3 at the Hidden Valley Invitational volleyball tournament Saturday in Southern Oregon. The Lady Pirates fell to Crater 2-1 (25-14, 21-25, 15-7), lost Sutherlin 2-0 (25-15, 25-16), beat Brookings-Harbor 2-0 (25-13, 25-18), and lost to Hidden Valley 2-0 (25-5, 25-19). Senior Kelsey Jackson had 24 kills and Sophomore Alex Locati recorded 18. Marshfield opens Far West League play Tuesday at Brookings-Harbor. North Bend hosts Coquille Monday, 6:30 p.m., and then opens FWL play Tuesday at home to Douglas.

Marshfield and North Bend’s cross country teams competed in the Ash Ck. Invitational Saturday at Western Oregon University in Monmouth. The Pirates ran in the girl’s JV 5K race and placed 10th out of 22 teams. North Bend was 20th. Individually for Marshfield: sophomore Jazmin Chavez was second overall (21:41.3), freshman Kaylee Delzotti was 12th (23:05.0), junior Madelyn Suppes 85th (25:45.7), sophomore Taylor Shea 131st (27:06.9), freshman Jordan Baarstad 160th (28:01.6), sophomore Rayne Quinones 176th (28:32.3), junior Isabella Webster 185th (28:49.7), junior Jaycee Smith 212th (30:32.8). For North Bend: Freshman Ashleigh Timm 116th (26:42.8), senior Alissa McCord 129th (27:03.6), Britta Kuckuck 154th, (27:51.3), sophomore Hannah Graber 200th (29:31.7), junior Claire Peters 222nd (31:06.8), sophomore Claire West 272nd (35:09.4). Marshfield’s boys were fifth out of 33-teams in the JV 5K race. North Bend was 20th. Both North Bend and Marshfield run in the NB Invite at Tugman State Park, Lakeside, Tuesday, Sept. 14th, and then the Prefontaine Run on Saturday, Sept. 17, in Coos Bay.
