Dayton and St. Mary’s of Medford won OSAA 3A basketball titles Saturday night at Marshfield High School in Coos Bay. It was the second straight year that the Dayton Pirates had won the girl’s championship, while St. Mary’s overcame a sixth seed to climb to the crown in the boy’s title game. Dayton bettered league rival Amity 56-42 in the first game of the championship doubleheader, while the Crusaders won a close battle with De La Salle North Catholic of Portland, 59-53. The 2A girl’s championship was one by Kennedy 52-32 over Burns, and the 1A girl’s crown went to Country Christian 59-37 over North Douglas. In other boy’s championships, Vernonia beat Regis 57-49 for the 2A title in Pendleton. Bandon finished fifth. At the 1A tournament in Baker City, Sherman beat Columbia Christian 53-45 for the championship. The 4A, 5A and 6A tournaments will be held this weekend, March 10-12, in Forest Grove/Hillsboro (4A), Corvallis (5A) and Portland (6A).
