OSU release – ALBANY, NY. – Oregon State needed just a little more magic, falling 70-58 to top-seeded and undefeated South Carolina in the Elite Eight. The Beavers fought for all 40 minutes but came up just short as open shots didn’t fall in the final moments after the Beavers got stop after stop with the game on the line. “I’ve gotten to talk a lot about great teams for a lot of years, and more importantly, great people, a lot of years. This team, it rivals any team I’ve ever been a part of. What they did this year is not common. It’s not normal. We’re not supposed to be here. But we are, and the people in the room get it. Not surprised by it,” head coach Scott Rueck said. “Y’all got to see it today, a fearless, gritty, tough display of competitive fire and passion and togetherness that is as inspiring as anything. What’s more inspiring than what you all just watched? Those of you who have been paying attention, which is not most of you, all year long, you would know that from day one. If you were with us in Italy, you would have seen what you saw today: Passion, unbelievable energy, togetherness, and a competitive fire that’s just not normal,” Rueck continued. Four Oregon State players scored in double figures with Raegan Beers leading the way with 16. Timea Gardiner scored 10 while owning the boards, pulling down 12 rebounds to cement defensive stops. Lily Hansford added 12 on four three-pointers while Talia von Oelhoffen scored 10 with five assists. The Beavers got off to a slow start, shooting 20 percent from the field as they acclimated to the big stage and South Carolina’s defense. The Gamecocks shot just 27 percent but made one more basket and hit a three to lead 10-4 midway through the first. The Beavers battled back late in the first and throughout the second with Hansford hitting huge triples and Beers picking up nine points inside to cut what was a 16-8 deficit down to 37-33 at halftime. The Beavs were hurt by questionable calls on Beers and Gardiner that both appeared to be clean on replay. South Carolina took control of the game in the third quarter, using Oregon State’s foul trouble against them in a physical period where the Gamecocks out-muscled OSU on the offensive glass and scored 10 second chance points. The Beavs roared back into the game in the fourth with a 12-4 start. Hansford and Gardiner drained triples before Donovyn Hunter made back-to-back buckets to cut the deficit to 62-58. South Carolina had one more run in it, however, closing on an 8-0 spurt to move on. Oregon State’s season comes to a close as one of the best in school history. The Beavers were picked 10th in the Pac-12 before making the Elite 8 and had a 14-win year-to-year turnaround by going from 13 to 27 victories.

Oregon State’s softball team got swept in Seattle, WA by the Washington Huskies, 5-4 Thursday, 7-1 Friday and 1-0 Saturday in Pac-12 games. The Beavers (3-6, 15-19) host UCLA on Friday, April 5, 5p, Pac-12 Networks. Oregon’s softball team dropped two Pac-12 games at UCLA. The Bruins won Thursday 5-3 & Friday 6-3. Saturday was cancelled. Oregon (7-4, 2012) hosts Washington on Friday, 7 p.m., Jane Sanders Stadium, Eugene, Pac-12 Networks.

Oregon State’s baseball team dropped two Pac-12 games at USC, 2-1 Thursday and 17-4 Friday before the two were rained out on Saturday. The Beavers (5-3, 21-4) have a non-conference game at home to Gonzaga Monday, 6p, Goss Stadium, Corvallis, Pac-12 Networks. Oregon’s baseball team swept three non-league games from visiting Seattle at PK Park, Eugene. The Ducks won Thursday 10-2, Friday 9-2 and Saturday 14-7. Oregon (6-3, 19-7) plays at Portland on Tuesday, April 2, 5:35 p.m.
