News release Newport PD.  On November 26, 2016, at 10:20 p.m., Newport Police Officers joined a law enforcement multi-agency effort that led to the arrest of a repeat offender for Driving Under the Influence of Intoxicants. On 11/26/2016, Willamette Valley Communications Center, and the Northern Area Command of the Oregon State Police, received information on a driving complaint. Witnesses reported a 2007 white Jeep Liberty traveling westbound on U.S. Highway 20 from milepost 19. The vehicle was reported to be traveling at a high rate of speed, and having difficulty maintaining its lane of travel. The vehicle was reported to have nearly crashed on multiple occasions by leaving the paved portion of the roadway, almost striking guardrails, and driving over the center line. Newport Police Officers located the vehicle, and initiated a traffic stop at the Shell gas station. The female and sole occupant of the vehicle was identified as Jennifer Anne Smith, age 34 of Beaverton, Oregon. Smith displayed several signs of impairment. There was evidence of both recent alcohol and cannabis consumption. Smith was subsequently arrested for Driving Under the Influence of Intoxicants. She was lodged at the Lincoln County Jail with her bail amount was set at $15,000.
