News release City of Coos Bay.  Two weeks ago, the City of Coos Bay discovered foam escaping out of four sanitary sewer manholes along North 8th Street near Teakwood Avenue. As a result, the City reported a sanitary sewer overflow to Oregon Department of Environmental Quality, Oregon Emergency Response System, and Oregon Department of Agriculture. It should be noted that the foam did not reach the storm water system or the bay. The area tributary to North 8th Street is approximately 0.3 square miles (see shaded green area in the image below).  The City of Coos Bay has been investigating this area to determine the source of the foam. To date, the results of the investigation have been inconclusive. The City of Coos Bay has taken preventive action by sealing and bolting down the manhole lids that were affected along North 8th Street. At this time, no further action will occur; however, if anyone has any information regarding the potential source of the foam please contact the Public Works Department at (541) 269-1181 ext. 2249.
