On December 23, 2016, at about 3:30 am, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue unit was requested to respond to a reported missing person. Amanda Cagle, age 32 of Reedsport, used a cell phone to make several calls to 911 centers in Lane and Douglas County advising she was lost in the woods. Cagle was last seen by her brother, James Thornton, at a logging site on Five Mile Rd. Thornton stated Amanda had gone for a walk around 8:00 pm and was going to walk to a “blinking red light.” In the area where Cagle had departed several towers with red blinking lights could be seen in the distance. Attempts to locate Cagle using her cell phone were determined to be unreliable. Deputies assigned to Search and Rescue responded to the area and eventually located Cagle on Five Mile Road at about 8:00 am. Cagle was very wet and cold. She stated she got lost in the dark and it began to rain hard. Cagle was transported to Lower Umpqua Hospital by ambulance for treatment of suspected hypothermia.
