The Oregon Department of Environmental Quality has fined Trident Seafoods Inc. $43,200 for violating its wastewater discharge permit at its facility at 623 Yaquina Bay Boulevard in Newport. The company exceeded various pollutant limits — including oil and grease, total suspended solids and biochemical oxygen demand — on dozens of occasions between July and October 2017. In some cases the company exceeded its pollutant limits by well over 50 percent – the exceedance considered the most serious violation. DEQ previously fined the company in 2017 for similar violations. By failing to comply with its permit requirements, the company created a risk that its wastewater discharges would negatively affect aquatic life and human health. The company has until Sept. 4 to appeal the penalty.
