Coquille, Oregon June 29th, 2015, through the combined efforts of multiple Coos Bay Police Officers and SCINT, Daniel Robert Taylor was sentenced to 120 months in prison after pleading guilty to Burglary in the Second Degree, three counts of Identity Theft, and Unlawful Possession of Methamphetamine. On March 23rd of 2015, Coos Bay Police were dispatch to a car clout in the area of Empire Lakes and John Topits Park in Coos Bay. The victim returned to his vehicle and noted items missing. Later the same day, the defendant was in a pursuit with Coos Bay Police when he discarded a backpack that contained the victim’s identification. Sergeant Lounsbury of the Coos Bay Police Department discovered video of Taylor purchasing cigarettes with one of the stolen cards within an hour of the car clout. On March 25th, 2015 Coos Bay Police responded to a frantic 9-1-1 call in the area of Alderwood in Coos Bay, Oregon. An adolescent female was home when Taylor approached the front door of the home and rang the doorbell. Knowing not to answer the door, Taylor was observed removing property from an attached garage. The minor confronted Taylor, Taylor discarded the property and left the scene. Responding Coos Bay Officer Wetmore developed Taylor as a suspect and with the assistance of Officer Krebs and witnesses identified Taylor as the burglar. Prior to the aforementioned burglary, another victim’s car was entered and property removed. After the burglary, Coos Bay Police Officer Looney was in a foot pursuit, which lead to Taylor being apprehended. Upon apprehension, Taylor was in possession of methamphetamine and the victim’s credit cards. Evidence indicated Taylor attempted to use this particular victim’s credit cards a total of five times. On March 28, 2015 the defendant was seen in the area of Hull Street in Coos Bay. Unbeknownst to the victims, their car had been entered. The victims began noticing unauthorized transactions taking place on their account. Coos Bay Sergeant Hatzel quickly responded and began tracking down the transactions. The investigation led him to a business where Taylor was located and confronted. With Officer Meyers assisting, it was confirmed Taylor was the individual using the cards. When contacted, the defendant was found in possession of a large amount of currency and drug paraphernalia. With the assistance of the business’ staff it was determined Taylor was in possession of the victim’s credit cards. The defendant was charged with multiple counts of Identity Theft, Fraudulent Use of a Credit Card, Theft, Criminal Mischief, Burglary, and Unlawful Possession of Methamphetamine. The defendant pleaded guilty to Burglary in the Second Degree and pursuant to Oregon Sentencing Guidelines was sentenced to 30 months in prison, three counts of Identity Theft and was sentenced to 30 months in prison on each count, and one count of Unlawful Possession of Methamphetamine and sentenced to six months. Over the defendant’s opposition, the State sought consecutive sentencing to represent each identified victim. Judge Stone acknowledged the impact Taylor had on each victim and therefore sentenced the defendant to consecutive sentences pursuant to the guidelines for a total of 120 months in prison.
