USCG release – WARRENTON, Ore. —A Coast Guard aircrew hoisted an individual who became stranded on a sand bar on Clatsop Spit, near Fort Stevens, Tuesday morning. An MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Astoria hoisted and safely transferred the 18-year-old male to Fort Stevens, where he was reunited with his family. Coast Guard Sector Columbia River Command Center watchstanders received a request for assistance from the individual via Astoria 911 Dispatch who called at 10:25 a.m. from his cell phone. The helo aircrew successfully hoisted and transported the individual at approximately 11:00 a.m. Two Coast Guard Station Cape Disappointment response boat crews also diverted to the scene to assist as needed. The Coast Guard reminds all beachgoers, residents and visitors to the Pacific Northwest coast to always be aware of the times that the tides change. Knowing this information can help you avoid these types of potentially dangerous situations. There were no medical concerns reported at the time of the rescue.
