Coast Guard scheduled to open 2 seasonal search, rescue detachments in Southern Oregon, May 25

Coast Guard Station Chetco River, located in Brookings, Ore., and Coast Guard Station Coos Bay, located in Charleston, Ore., reopened their seasonal search and rescue detachments along the Rogue River and Coquille River, Friday, May 22. The temporary assignment of Coast Guard personnel and assets to these seasonal SARDETs does not diminish the parent stations ability to respond to emergencies. The SARDETs are operated on a seasonal basis from Memorial Day weekend through early fall depending on boating traffic and bar conditions. The Rogue River SARDET will operate both the 47-foot Motor Life Boat and 25-foot Response Boat – Small, while the Coquille River SARDET will operate a 47-foot Motor Life Boat. The Coast Guard asks all boaters to pay close attention to bar conditions along both the Rogue River and Coquille River as the weather can change rapidly. A rough bar warning sign will be posted at each site to notify boaters when conditions are unfavorable. Boaters can contact the Rogue River SARDET on VHF-FM Channel 16 or land line at 541-247-7219. The Coquille River SARDET can also be contacted on VHF-FM Channel 16 or at 541-347-2038 for their land line. Boaters are encouraged to wear life jackets and ensure all distress signaling equipment is current and working properly. All vessels should carry an anchor and enough line to anchor their boat. For additional information about the search and rescue detachments contact Coast Guard Station Chetco River at 541-469-3885 or Coast Guard Station Coos Bay at 541-888-3267.
