C&K Market Inc., the parent company of Ray’s Food Place, Shop Smart & C&K Markets, has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. The grocery chain, started in Smith River, CA, is based in Brookings and operates 60 stores in Oregon and Northern California. Company officials plan to close 16 stores and layoff 20-percent of its 2,500 employees, and say the bankruptcy was brought on by the popularity and growth of large discount stores, such as Costco and Walmart. Under Chapter 11, C&K Market will be allowed to restructure.
