News release from the Coos Co. Sheriff’s Office. “On 26 February, 2014 at about 11:00 PM, Coos County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a report of a possible prowler of a woman’s residence which was located in an industrial area on Transpacific Parkway, On the North Spit, North Bend. The caller was residing on industrial property which she was a caretaker for. Upon the Deputies arrival they discovered evidence that someone had been around her residence. The Deputy requested assistance from the Sheriff’s canine. Coos County Sheriff Canine “Neko” responded and assisted in locating and identifying a suspect. After an investigation Sheriff’s Deputies arrested Leland Laidlaw, 50 years old for Criminal Trespass II and Theft II. He was transported to the Coos County Jail and booked.”

North Bank Lane Accident
News release from the Coos Co. Sheriff’s Office.  “On February 26, 2014 at 1029 hours the Coos County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a traffic crash on North Bank Lane, north of Coquille.  When the report first came in the 911 Center the caller was at first not able to correctly tell the dispatcher her location.  When the Sheriff’s Office arrived they found the scene two miles away from where the Caller originally thought she was at.  Upon arrival Sheriff’s Deputies found the operator and only occupant of the vehicle, 70 year old Emma Little of Myrtle Point had lost control of her 1994 Ford pickup on the bridge near the intersection of North Bank Lane and Raccoon Road, just off from Hwy 42.  The pickup was blocking one lane of traffic after colliding with the concrete abutment of the bridge.  Ms. Little was the single occupant of the vehicle.  Mast Brothers towing responded and took the vehicle and Ms. Little was taken to Coquille Valley Hospital by private vehicle to be checked.”

Fat Elk Road Assault
News release from the Coos Co. Sheriff’s Office.  “On February 26, 2014 at 1100 hours the Coos County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a woman in the emergency room of the Coquille Valley Hospital who was suffering from injuries of an assault.  Coos County Sheriff’s Deputies and the Coos County Medical Examiner’s Office responded to the hospital and met with the victim, 37 year old Coquille resident, Gidget Bowen.  Ms. Bowen told authorities she had been assaulted by her boyfriend, 40 year old Coquille resident, Dereck Padgett.   Ms. Bowen, although was reluctant to disclose information, as is often the case in domestic assaults, did tell the Sheriff’s Office she had been assaulted by Mr. Padget with a blunt instrument during the previous night.  Mr. Padgett and Ms. Bowen had been camping near Fat Elk Road in the Coquille area when the assault occurred.  During the assault Ms. Bowen was also strangled and held against her will while the infliction of pain and injury occurred.  The beating of Ms. Bowen was extensive.   Dereck Padgett was contacted by phone and agreed to give himself up to the Sheriff’s Office.  During the early evening hours of February 26, 2014 Mr. Padgett gave himself up to the investigators at the Sheriff’s Office and was lodged at the Coos County Jail.   Dereck Padgett was lodged at the Coos County Jail on Assault II ($250,000), Strangulation ($10,000), Menacing ($10,000), Kidnapping II ($250,000), and Unlawful Use of a Weapon ($25,000).  Total $545,000 bail.  As with all cases this one is still under investigation.  The Coos County Sheriff’s Office would like to thank the Coos County Medical Examiner’s Office for their assistance.”
