Marshfield Coach Aron Boesl’s capture of the first day of the Girl’s District Tennis Tournament at Black Butte Ranch, west of Sisters in Central Oregon. Today at Girls district tennis: Rain has landed on Black Butte Ranch! For MHS Katie Boesl was seeded number 3. NB #1 doubles team seeded third on the doubles side. In a rain caused chaotic schedule teams scattered to indoor courts at Eagle Crest, Bend Golf and Tennis and The Athletic club in Bend a modified shortened first day schedule was played. Two MHS first round singles matches were played. Jodi Zousel lost to Amy Wade of Mazama 6-3, 3-6, 10-12 in an exciting match. Colleen Rayburn beat the number 5 seed Madelyn Mirande of Klamath Union 6-4, 6-1. ” I am very excited with our draw and hope we can put some team points on the board.” Girls Tennis Districts Day 2: Once again Rain moved the matches off the mountain down to Sam Johnson Park near Redmond High School and Ridgeview High School, then moved to The Athletic Club of Bend. The first and second round of the main bracket and the the consolation were completed. The first round and second doubles matches were played at Sam Johnson Park. In the first Round MHS girls Katrina Garcia and Sierra Banks defeated Kaitlyn Brown and Shelby Rodgers of Henley 6-0, 6-0. Braeden Kennedy and Desiree Guirado lost to McKaela Larson and Kenzy Kvanduch of Junction City 5-7, 6-4 5-10. Abby Clough and Sara Springael of MHS beat Mackenzee Scott and McKenna Reasor of North Bend 6-2, 6-1. Shasta Banks and Patrizia Cugnetto lost to Gracelyn Morgan and Tisha Bray of Klamath Union 2-6, 1-6. In the second round in doubles. Katrina Garcia and Sierra Banks suffered a tough lost to Sierra Starr and Marley McIntosh of Junction City 2-6, 6-2, 23-25 in the match of the day. Abby Cough and Sara Springael defeated Sabrina Miller and Chloe Phillips of St. Mary’s 6-4, 6-2. In the Quarter finals Abby Clough and Sara Springael defeated the number four seed Haley Carlson and Savannah Spear of Sisters 7-5, 6-2. This puts them in the final four and qualifies them for the state tournament. Consolation Doubles: 1st round Shasta Banks and Patrizia Cugnetto lost to Karen LaGesse and Bailey Lyon of North Bend; Ist round Braeden Kennedy and Desiree Guirado defeated Emilee Westover and Allison Sanchez of Henley 8-1, 2nd round they defeated Karee Hernandez and Yeimi Montano of Mazama 8-4 to advance to the semifinals of the consolation bracket. On the singles side in the First Round completion. Katie Boesl defeated Amanda Goodwin of Junction City 6-2, 6-2. Lindsay Brown lost a tough match Nova Rumery of Hidden Valley 4-6, 4-6. In the second round, Colleen Rayburn played a two hour two set match against Belen Recuero of Junction City 5-7, 6-4. Katie Boesl defeated Emerald DeBoer of St. Mary’s 6-0,6-2. In the Quarterfinals played at The Athletic Club of Bend Katie Boesl defeated Kelsie Asay of Henley 6-0, 6-1 to advance to the semifinals and qualify for the state tournament. Ist and second rounds Consolation: Jody Zousel lost to Dianna Oh of Junction City 2-8. Lindsay Brown won her first consolation match Anna Peasley of Sisters 8-6. Then defeated Jessica Egli of Junction City 8-4 to advance to the semi finals of the consolation bracket. The final day of the the District 3 Girls tennis tournament: Was moved to Sam Johnson city park, then finals and 3 and 4th played at the Bend tennis and Golf country club due to weather. Consolation finals were at Bend High. The 5th location. In singles Singles Semi final Match Katie Boesl Lost to Eventual district champ Nicole Morse 5-7, 2-6. Then beat Belen Recuero of Junction City 6-3, 2-6, 10-7 for third place. “Belen is a tough opponent who makes very few mistakes and beat a number of good players, Katie fought through and finished strong.” In singles consolation Lindsay Brown lost to Amanda Goodwin of Junction City 1-8. “Lindsay played some of her best tennis at districts this year, she should be very happy to end her high school career with what she accomplished. In Doubles Sara Springeal and Abby Clough were defeated by eventual championships Marisa Doveri and Lily Inthisan of Klamath union in the semi final match 3-6, 1-6. Then lost to Venessa Matheson and Jessee Vezo of Henley 1-6, 1-6 ending with fourth place. “The doubles teams in this league will go far at state so it was great to get Sara and Abby through to state, they are very excited!” In consolation Doubles semifinals, Braeden Kennedy and Desiree Guirado beat Breanna Queaga and Mishaundra Schermerhorn of Hidden Valley 8-4. In the finals Braeden and Desiree came from behind to win the match after losing the first set 0-6 they came together to win 6-3 ,10-7 against Olivia Curran and Kiley Mehlbrech from Junction City. “ It was awesome to see Braeden and Desiree stay focused and bounce back from the first set loss and pull out the win for the consolation championship. Their win moved us into the second place spot over Klamath Union as a team, we are very excited about the results of districts this year.” Henley won the team championship with 21 points, Marshfield was second with 19, Klamath Union third with 18 points with North Bend and Sisters were tied with 16 points for fourth.
Coos Co. Track
North Bend and Marshfield split titles at the 106th Annual Coos Co. Track Meet on Prefontaine Track inside Pete Susick Stadium at Marshfield High School in Coos Bay. The Bulldogs tallied 207-points to win the boy’s championship. Marshfield was second with 168.5, followed by Coquille with 71, Bandon 37, Myrtle Point 19 and Powers 3.5. The Lady Pirates won their title with 190-points, while North Bend was second with 165.5. Bandon grabbed third with 57, followed by Coquille withy 37, Myrtle Point 30 and Powers 1.5. Several Bay Area athletes were honored as “Outstanding.” For the Boy Runner: North Bend’s Matt Woods in capturing both the 100 & 200, setting a meet record in the 100 and running on the Bulldogs winning meet record 4X100 Relay team. Marshfield’s Hunter Drops was named the Boy Jumps after winning the Pole Vault. On the girl’s list: Tracee Scott of Marshfield was named outstanding thrower with wins in the Shot Put and Discus. Adrykana Chavez set a meet record in the Triple Jump and was named girl’s outstanding jumper. Next up for North Bend and Marshfield is the 4A Far West League District Championships at Siuslaw High School in Florence Friday and Saturday. Rain got the better of the 4A Far West League baseball schedule Friday, May 9. Marshfield and South Umpqua got their doubleheader in at Tri City. The third place Lancers won both games, 13-8 & 8-0. First place North Bend hosts Douglas Monday, 3 & 5 p.m. at Clyde Allen Field. And, second place Siuslaw also plays today at Brookings-Harbor. Sutherlin had the bye.

Softball teams within the 4A Far West League were all washed out from their scheduled games for the first time this season, Friday, May 9. As a result, they’ll all try again today to get their doubleheaders in. League leader South Umpqua visits Marshfield. Second place Douglas hosts North Bend, and third place Brookings-Harbor visits Siuslaw in Florence. Sutherlin had the bye.
