News release from the Coos Co. Sheriff’s Office. On 3/16/2015 at about 1:45 PM a Coos County Sheriff’s Deputy attempted to stop a vehicle for speed violations in Bandon, Oregon. The 1997 Honda sedan turned onto Highway 42S and attempted to elude the deputy. The driver sped away from the Deputy reaching speeds over 100 miles per hour as the driver attempted to elude the deputy. Law Enforcement Officers from around the county, Coos County Sheriff’s Office, Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, Officers from Coquille Police Department, Bandon Police Department and Troopers from the Oregon State Police all were involved in pursuing the vehicle. The vehicle traveled Hwy 42S to Lampa Mountain Road, almost reaching the community of Arago, then doubled back on Lampa Mountain Road to Hwy 42S and down to the community of Riverton where the driver and a female passenger eventually abandoned the car and fled on foot. The vehicle was located at the end of a lane in the community of Riverton and eventually seized. Police officers secured a perimeter around the small community and a K9 unit was called in. The track led to a residence in Riverton where police believe the suspects fled to and were secreted by the home owner but, were denied entry into the home. At 4:00 PM the search was called off without the suspects being located. The following morning, 03/17/2015 deputies were able to identify the driver of the vehicle as Jonathan Wyatt Windhurst, age 29 of Bandon. Mr. Windurst was located in Bandon and arrested on the charges of Attempt to Elude (Felony), Reckless Driving and Reckless Endangerment. The female passenger has been identified but she faces no charges at this time. The investigation is continuing and additional charges are also expected.
